Favorite Movies of 2012: Argo
Argo (2012)
Directed by: Ben Affleck
Written by: Chris Terrio
Cast: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, John Goodman
It is quite hard to write something about an excellently put together film like Argo. It is based on actual events during the Iranian revolution when protesters took over the American Embassy in Iran but 6 officials were able to escape and hide in the Canadian ambassador's house. Ben Affleck has successfully narrated the story as if it's happening before our very eyes the first time. Chris Terrio's screenplay is indeed full of historical inaccuracies but there has never been a better written thriller in years. Rodrigo Prieto gave the film a very genuine 70s feel through his beautiful lenses. While Affleck delivered a great job behind the camera, his on-cam duty was not top-notch. It leaves me wondering what a more capable actor could have done with the Tony Mendez role. Alan Arkin, with his rich vocabulary (hahaha), provided the comic relief against the very serious theme. John Goodman and Bryan Cranston also delievered memorable supporting turns. Truth is the three aforementioned actors stole every scene they were in. My heart skipped a beat towards the climactic escape and I thought everyone in the theater was at the edge of their seats holding their breath. The movie itself was an exhilarating experience.
