Favorite Movies of 2012: Bwakaw

Bwakaw (2012)
Director: Jun Lana
Written by: Jun Lana
Cast: Eddie Garcia, Soxie Topacio, Joey Paras, Beverly Salviejo, Rez Cortez

Made as a tribute to the director's late mentor, Rene Villanueva, the film is triumphant both in its quietness and broadness. Bwakaw tells the story of an old man who has come out of the closet in his twilight years. Resolved to dedicate the remaining years of his life in preparinf for his demise, his pet dog teaches him how to live the moment and do what can bring him happiness. I have meandered in its quiet course and marvelled at the poignancy that the film has allowed me to experience. The comic moments (seriously ROFL) are pauses for the film not to wallow in its melancholy. Octogenarian Eddie Garcia brings a lot of gravitas and honesty in his portrayal of the cantankerous protagonist (although we usually see him with his broad perfs in TV shows). Beverly Salviejo, Rez Cortez, Soxie Topacio, and Joey Paras also provide solid supporting turns.
POST SCRIPT
Bwakaw is one of the best Filipino films I've seen in years. It is the official entry of the Philippines to the 85th Academy Awards. Nominations will be announced on 10 January 2013. The film was screened at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival and the 50th New York Film Festival to positive reviews (The Hollywood Reporter, Time Magazine, and Oscar blog The Film Experience).
